{"id":1786,"date":"2019-07-09T04:41:07","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T04:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/necdo.org.af\/?p=1786"},"modified":"2019-07-09T04:42:54","modified_gmt":"2019-07-09T04:42:54","slug":"the-activists-leading-efforts-for-womens-rights-at-afghan-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/necdo.org.af\/the-activists-leading-efforts-for-womens-rights-at-afghan-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"The Activists Leading Efforts for Women&#8217;s Rights at Afghan Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Female delegates at intra-Afghan talks in Doha say many women pin hopes on them to advance dialogue on women&#8217;s rights.<\/p>\n<p>Jamila Afghani: &#8216;We have to accept that through fighting, no one will win, everybody will have to accept peace&#8217; [Sorin Furcoi\/Al Jazeera]<\/p>\n<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" class=\"article-p-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><strong>Doha, Qatar &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>Jamila Afghani, a prominent women&#8217;s rights activist, was getting ready to address a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/07\/qatar-hosts-intra-afghan-summit-peace-talks-taliban-190706134720995.html\">peace dialogue<\/a>\u00a0attended by Afghan leaders and\u00a0<a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/taliban.html\">Taliban<\/a>\u00a0representatives in Doha, when she got the news of an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/07\/afghanistan-killed-taliban-car-bomb-attack-ghazni-190707060218685.html\">attack<\/a>\u00a0back home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Taliban fighters had just detonated a car bomb close to the office of Afghanistan&#8217;s main intelligence service in Ghazni, killing eight security personnel and six civilians, including a child. The powerful blast on Sunday wounded at least 180 people, including 60 children attending classes at a nearby private school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Three people out of those wounded were Afghani&#8217;s relatives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was very upset when I heard about the attack in Ghazni, and when I received a phone call informing me of my family members injured in the attack, I could barely believe I am here to talk with the Taliban about peace,&#8221; Afghani told Al Jazeera on Monday, her voice choking as she fought back tears.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So I took up the opportunity and addressed to them on behalf of everyone in Afghanistan of how desperate we are for peace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-also-read article-embed-tb-block article-embedded-card \">\n<div class=\"topic-label\">READ MORE<\/div>\n<h4><a class=\"article-embed-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/07\/intra-afghan-peace-talks-taliban-attacks-continue-190707175827231.html\">Intra-Afghan peace talks under way amid more Taliban attacks<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<h2>&#8216;A good start&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Sponsored by Qatar and Germany, the two-day talks in Doha are attended by Taliban representatives and about 50 Afghan politicians and activists, including 10 female delegates.<\/p>\n<p>The gathering was organised in a bid to initiate direct dialogue on sustaining peace and equality in war-torn\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/Afghanistan.html\">Afghanistan<\/a>\u00a0after the complete withdrawal of foreign troops, which is among the issues on the table in separate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-States.html\">United States<\/a>-Taliban talks also held in Doha but paused for two days to allow for the intra-Afghan meeting to take place.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since Washington began negotiating with the Taliban last year, two Afghan government officials came face-to-face with Taliban representatives at the intra-Afghan gathering.<\/p>\n<p>Afghani\u00a0said many young female Afghans were pinning their hopes on her and other women delegates to continue talks with the Taliban on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/women-rights.html\">women&#8217;s rights<\/a>\u00a0in the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The meeting is a good start, we have to keep the dialogue going,&#8221; she said, adding that the Taliban&#8217;s &#8220;mindset&#8221; has changed and are &#8220;more willing to discuss women&#8217;s rights&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Before the Taliban was toppled in a US-led invasion in 2001, women were banned from working and accessing education under the armed group&#8217;s five-year rule.<\/p>\n<p>Afghani, in a bid to encourage women&#8217;s education in post-Taliban Afghanistan, worked with more than 6,000 Islamic scholars in 22 provinces\u00a0to educate them on women&#8217;s rights.<\/p>\n<p>The scholars were asked to encourage Afghan men to bring their daughters and wives to her Kabul-based foundation, called Noor Educational and Capacity Development Organization, where Afghani provided free education to women and young girls.<\/p>\n<p>Overall,\u00a0some 60,000 women have learned to read and write in the\u00a0schools set up by Afghani&#8217;s\u00a0non-profit organisation since 2001.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;What is your definition of hijab?&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>At the Doha event, women delegates and the Taliban shared tables while dining and respectfully spoke to each other.<\/p>\n<p>Before coming face-to-face with the Taliban, the female participants agreed to be patient during the talks.<\/p>\n<p>During the first day of the event, Fawzia Koofi, a women&#8217;s rights activist and politician, recalled how her husband was put in jail under the Taliban rule and that she was beaten for applying nail polish.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What is your definition of hijab,&#8221; she asked the Taliban on the first day of the talks. &#8220;Because, during the Taliban time, women were beaten for not wearing a burqa [veil].&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-also-read article-embed-tb-block article-embedded-card \">\n<div class=\"topic-label\">READ MORE<\/div>\n<h4><a class=\"article-embed-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/07\/progress-taliban-5th-day-talks-190703084327004.html\">&#8216;Spectacular progress&#8217;, says Taliban as US talks enter fifth day<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<p>A Taliban representative replied by saying: &#8220;From our understanding of Islam, the scarf wrapped around your head is what defines how women should be covering up. We don&#8217;t have a problem with that.
